Sadhana Introduction

The sadhana activities have been chosen to help us manage our minds over the next 26 weeks and strengthen our connection to our beloved Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
If we fully participate in the activities such as Likhita japam and Namsmaran we will be able to intensify our connection with Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba  and learn to recognise HIS presence in all that we do and those who we meet.

Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says…

It is the prime duty of everyone who has had the chance of this human birth, to spare a part of their energies occasionally to prayer, repetition of the Lord’s name, meditation, etc. Everyone must equate living with truth, righteousness, peacefulness, and good works that are of service to others.
Prema Vahini, Ch. 65

In addition to the sadhana activities listed below, Likthita japam/mala, practising Ceiling on desires and reading Sai literature have also been recommended.

Ashtothram
Ashtothram
Plant the seed of the name of the Lord, any one of His thousand names that appeals to you, in the well-prepared soil of your heart and let it sprout in the silence there; water it with love and service to fellowmen; guard it against pests and cattle, the outward dragging emotions and passions, by putting up the fence of japa and dhyana, then you will get the harvest of Anandha. – Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 4, Chapter 29: 08 October 1964.
Gayatri is The Mother Of The Vedas
Gayatri is The Mother Of The Vedas
Gayatri is sarvadevata swarupini and sarvamantra swarupini (embodiment of all gods and all mantras). It is said, Gayatri Chhandasam Matha, meaning Gayatri is the mother of the Vedas. There is no need to chant any other mantra if you chant the Gayatri mantra. Gayatri has three names: Gayatri, Savi-tri and Saraswati. Gayantham Trayate ithi Gayatri (Gayatri protects the one who recites it). Gayatri is the master of the senses. Savitri is the presiding deity of the life principle. When Gayatri acts as the protector of life force, she is known as Savitri. You might have heard the story of Savitri, a woman of chastity, who brought her dead husband, Sathyavan, back to life with the power of her prayer. Savitri protects those who lead a life of Sathya (truth). This is the inner meaning. Saraswathi is the presiding deity of speech. Man has to earn the grace of Gayatri, Savitri and Saraswati to sanctify his life. – Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 33, Ch 4: 10 February 2000.
Soham meditation
Soham meditation
We must always, at all times and under at all circumstances spend our time in constant contemplation of God. This should become the very breath of our life and as natural as we inhale and exhale. This is “soham that-thwa”. This constant contemplation on the soham thatthwa is the real sadhana. Wherefrom does this “soham” come? It comes from the enquiry “koham” (who am I?) The result of this enquiry is “soham”. It is only when you realise this eternal truth, your sadhana will fructify. – Sri Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 35, Ch 12: 23 July 2002
Jyothi Light Meditation
Jyothi Light Meditation
The mind flies at a tangent all the time. Meditation (dhyana) is the process by which it is trained to acquire concentration. As a result of meditation on the highest Atma (Paramatma), the mind will withdraw from sense objects and the sensory world. Just at that time, the intellect (buddhi) must assert its authority and command the mind (manas) not to entertain any feeling except the thought of the Fundamental Basis. Dhyana Vahini, Ch.1
