STUDY CIRCLE

What is a study circle?

A study circle addresses the human need for self inquiry, curiosity, absorbing knowledge  and making sense of our own existence in society and the world at large. It is a group discussion amongst spiritual seekers reflecting on spiritual and faith based material. This can be a key text, quote, talk or message from Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the Old and New Testament, the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Guru Granth Sahib to name but a few.

Those who attend unpick and discuss the core, underlying meanings of the material.  Everyone is encouraged to speak and share their thoughts and feelings. They clarify points for each other, removing any misconceptions and arriving at a clear understanding.

Study circles should not be used for expressions of rhetoric and intellectual knowledge, platforms for ego and venting of superiority.

What are the benefits of a study circle?

Study circles help deepen understanding of spiritual teachings and messages, with a view to apply these to daily living. In other words, the basic goal of a study circle is to help lead a more spiritual life and come closer to the divine.

How should a study circle be conducted?

A study circle is a collective endeavour where listening with love and empathy means everyone grows through this shared experience.

A facilitator can be chosen to ensure smooth and flowing discussion where everyone shares their view. Facilitators can keep everyone on topic and avoid them veering off on tangents.

  1. A study circle should not just be reading or transfer of knowledge as doubts and confusions could remain unresolved.
  2. Those participating in a study circle should respectfully listen to the points of view of others.
  3. Everyone should be encouraged to speak without interruption or fear of judgement.
  4. There should be time to reflect on the wisdom, resolve doubts and answer questions.
  5. Time needs to be allocated to practical application and how to integrate these insights into daily life, leading to self transformation.

In the words of Sri Sathya Sai Baba text animation

“A STUDY circle does not mean only just reading and discussing and taking information into the head, but also putting into practice what is learnt. If knowledge is stored in the mind, it causes confusion and confusion leads to blowing of the fuse. How will real jnana (spiritual wisdom) develop if there is too much confusion? For instance, if you go on eating all the 24 hours, it will result in indigestion. This will lead to disease. What is eaten should be digested and then only you should eat again. In the same way, you should listen {eat) in the Study Circle and put into practice (digest) what you have learnt. Again you can have another round of listening in the Study Circle. Now what you are doing is only loading and loading and no unloading. How much can you sustain like that? So, you should go on loading and unloading, listening and practising. You have to practise whatever you have learnt. Then only it becomes a real Study Circle.” – Sri Sathya Sai Baba (Discourse 30th January 1985).
